Institutional Development Program

RMDC has made significant contributions to the promotion and development of the sector in the country. At the outset, there were a very few well performing MFIs. Most of the microfinance banks and FINGOs did not have adequate capacities to expand outreach and provide quality services to a large number of the poor households. Realizing the need, RMDC, from the very beginning of its operation, has been giving its focus on institutional strengthening of existing MFIs as well as developing the potential institutions from scratch. Although microcredit programs began in the country nearly four decades back, no substantial efforts have been made for the promotion and development of capable and sustainable microfinance institutions in the country. Past microcredit programs, which were directly or indirectly implemented by the government, focused mainly on the quantity of disbursement. They ignored the aspect of sustainability of microfinance institutions.
