MEMBER OVERVIEW

The Foundation for Development Cooperation is an independent, not-for-profit international development organisation. 
Established in Brisbane, Australia, in 1990, the mandate of FDC calls for it to conduct policy-oriented research, foster public awareness, mobilise broader Australian and overseas development cooperation, and support non-governmental development efforts. 
Through partnerships and alliances, FDC undertakes a range of initiatives which seek to improve the lives of poor people in developing countries, foster innovative approaches to development, and connect policy work to self-help efforts at the grass roots level. 
FDC’s work includes economic development and assessment, policy analysis, grass-roots community-based initiatives, strategic research, partnerships and leverage, advocacy, consulting and advisory services, project design and implementation, secretariat and network management, and training and capacity building. 
FDC’s headquarters is in Brisbane, Australia.  FDC has an Asia regional office in Singapore and a Pacific regional office in Fiji.

AREAS OF ACTIVITY

Access to Energy - supporting the access to modern forms of energy for the one billion people in the Asia-Pacific region who do not currently benefit from access to clean/cleaner/more renewable energy.

Disaster Risk Management - Developing, collating and disseminating training materials to ensure stronger responses and better risk management by microfinance institutions in the event of natural disasters.

Governance and Gender Leadership - FDC supports projects that strengthen democratic instiutions, promote human rights, and ensure the participation of all groups in democratic processes. More specifically, FDC aims to increase women's knowledge of governance and leadership in the Pacific region by empowering bottom-up governance initiatives of local women.

Local Economic Development - Empowering community economies and livelihoods in developing countries. Through the introduction and application of innovative approaches, and collaborative partnerships, FDC aims to enhance the economy and livelihood prospects for communities in developing countries.

Microfinance and Financial Inclusion - Promotion of greater financial inclusion for the poor in developing countries, through a broad focus on microfinance and related activities such as:

Microfinance Networks: Establishing and maintaining two major networks of microfinance institutions to enable sharing of know-how (Banking with the Poor in Asia, and Microfinance Pasifika in the Pacific).

Partnerships: Promoting new approaches to partnerships which help microfinance instiutions provide more products to their clients such as insurance, leases and pensions.

Migrant Worker Remittances - Analysing the flows and stocks of worker remittances into various developing countries and devising imporved policy and technical responses to lower the transfer costs faced by senders and recipients. P

Private Sector Engagement - Defining a private sector-led development agenda; devising and supporting concepts wihch will provide a vehicle for private sector contributions to be made twoard Australia's and the world's international development effort.

Resource Sector - Working in developing countries to help maximise the benefits resource sector companies can deliver to communities while at the same time supporting and growing their core business.

Social Enterprise Development - Serving as an advisor to various committees and organisations, contributing to global on-line discussions and training forums, implementing technical assitance projects, and developing case studies and research materials; FDC contributes ot expanding knowledge and awarenes among a wide set of people regarding development impacts that cna be achieved through social enterprise.

Technology for Development (ICT4D) - Creating and sharing partnership initiatives which help transfer new technological approaches in developing countries, for example mobile phone banking and virtual education.

Inaugural Student Essay Competition
The Foundation for Development Cooperation and The University of Queensland are proud to announce the Inaugural Student Essay Competition. The essay competition is open to all UQ students. The essay must address one of our selected topics and must not exceed 3000 words. The essay must be thoroughly referenced and contain a bibliography. The paper will be assessed by a panel of UQ academics and FDC staff. Submit your papers electronically by Monday 7 December 2009 to info@fdc.org.au. For more infomation click here.

FDC Nai Sema
The Foundation for Development Cooperation is proud to present the first issue of its occasional paper series: FDC Nai Sema - Mobile Financial Services: Extending the Reach of Financial Services Through Mobile Payment Systems. Nai Sema means “to connect” in the Fijian language. Through this occasional paper series, FDC aims to promote an exchange of ideas amongst those working in international development and cooperation and to generate discussion on the topics presented within. Disaster Risk Management Workshop
From October 14 to 16 2009 FDC held a Disaster Risk Management (DRM) workshop in Port Moresby, PNG in partnership with TorqAid. The workshop included participants from a range of local and international organisations such as the PNG National Disaster Center, AusAID, World Vision and HOPE Worldwide. PNG is vulnerable to a number of both natural and man-made disasters such as those caused by volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, flooding, HIV/AIDS and climate change. The workshop focused on methods to evaluate and strengthen DRM and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) initiatives through all stages of project development and implementation.
