Microfinance and Disaster Management

Research

Objectives of the Research

The objective of the research was to gather new learning from the Tsunami experience on disaster management for microfinance providers, and incorporate them into the training curriculum. The research coordinator visited microfinance providers in India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka to discuss their post-tsunami relief and reconstruction activities, specifically in relation to those interventions that have been problematic for microfinance in previous experience, notably cash grants and cash-for-work. Other studies conducted on the topics in these three countries by non-partner organizations, and other relevant studies from other natural disaster affected areas were also collected to review for lessons.
