The Asia Microfinance Forum 2008 formally commenced on the evening of Tuesday, 26 August 2008, and concluded on the afternoon of Friday, 29 August 2008.  A number of pre-event activities and meetings took place on Monday, 25 August 2008, and Tuesday, 26 August 2008.  There were five major pre- and parallel events held in conjunction with the AMF 2008.

The Asia Microfinance Forum 2008 was a significant international microfinance conference which attracted 550 delegates from 50 countries with 95 speakers and moderators.

The central aim of the Asia Microfinance Forum 2008 was to examine the prospects for rapidly increasing and deepening the outreach of financial services to the poor in Asia.  A particular focus was placed on the building of partnerships and innovative new business models that combine the resources of a range of different stakeholders, as well as highlighting ways to improve the policy environment for the growth of microfinance in the region.

The three (3) main objectives of the AMF 2008 were as follows:

- To encourage the effective development  of innovative  microfinance products and approaches between and  among - stakeholders in  the Asia region;

- To identify and target  future  opportunities and challenges arising from issues such as investment, technology  and the  environment;

- To encourage  partnerships and cooperation in Asia among microfinance service  providers, financiers  and regulators in order to  increase resources and peer learning in microfinance.
